Tips To Save On Textbooks For College

Coming soon. Textbooks on disks.
December 16th, 2014

College is not always about having fun. There are challenges that must be overcome and one of them is debt. A lot of students have huge student debts and when they graduate from college, they will have an extremely hard time paying it off.

So when you enter college, it’s important to know how to save money even on things that may seem trivial such as overpriced textbooks. According to the College Board, students in the US spend about $1,200 in textbooks alone.

Fortunately, you don’t have to give up required textbooks altogether. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you want to save on college textbooks:

Look For Book Sales

Used books are often the go-to resource of students, especially in college. There are stores that offer used books required by your subjects and you can easily get information on these book sales from your college or even online. Choose used books that have complete pages and are readable. You can even opt for book rentals.

Buying an earlier edition of the textbook is also a good way to save money. These are often cheaper while still containing nearly everything that the current edition has. Just don’t buy editions that are already too old.

Share Books With A Friend

If you have a friend taking the same classes, why not share textbooks? You can purchase the textbook, split the cost, and then sell it after the end of your semester. Both of you would only be paying half the price of the book and even get your money back when someone else buys your book.

Borrow Books from a Friend

If you know someone, such as a friend or a former classmate, who has already finished taking a particular class, ask them if you can borrow their old books. Most of them would be happy to lend their textbooks to you instead of letting the books gather dust in their shelves.

Study at The Library

Every college library normally has the text books you need. Visiting the library and studying there would also help you relax and focus on your studies. Just make sure to go there early to make sure the textbook you’re looking for is still available.

Find Great Deals On The Internet

The internet is a great way to find text books at a discount. Textbook hunting isn’t so hard online either. Find online book stores that sell used copies, or you can purchase e-books which are considerably cheaper than paper books. You can even get free downloadable textbooks online although these are hard to come by.

Money is a scarce resource for college students and that’s why it is important to save as much as you can so you don’t incur too much debt. Saving on textbooks is a good start, and once you got the hang of it, you can then start thinking of other ways to save or earn money to help pay for your college tuition.
