Tips On Writing Great College Essays

college essays
December 30th, 2014

Most people feel intimidated when asked to write an essay. But you need to eliminate the fear, anxiety, and doubt when asked to write one as part of your college admission requirements. Why is that particular essay mandatory for entry to the collegiate level? At the very least, such an essay will show that your grammar and spelling are good enough to be understood.

The School Wants to Get to Know You

Admission officers would also like to know your personality traits and character as a person and future student of their school. They want to know about your history, interests, attitude, behavior, creativity, passion, pet peeves, and strengths. There are no right or wrong answers.

The college or university just wants to get to know the person behind the college application. Your essay will tell the school who you are, how you think, what you like and dislike, and why you want to study at their school. The school wants to know your values and goals and whether you will fit in their particular community.

College essays are typically evaluated by a number of general criteria. Your writing, for instance, would be scrutinized for grammar and spelling, cohesion, structure, logic, and trend of thought. So if you have been used to taking shortcuts in punctuation, sequence, abbreviation, and other writing essentials, you had better start practicing how to write well enough to read.

You must be able to write good paragraphs, discuss your chosen topic at length and with credibility, and engage the reader’s interest. Providing a plethora of details will not make any difference because what you are writing is not a résumé. The trick here is to focus on two to three aspects of yourself so whoever is reading it will learn some things about you.

The Essay Does Not Need to be Elaborate

Don’t write in “stuffy language” that sounds more like a legal deposition than a college essay. On the other hand, don’t write in a rambling manner that reminds the reader of somebody who is tipsy and rambles on and on without ever getting to the point. Ditch the temptation to quote great authors or celebrities. Your college essay does not need to be grandiose or eloquent.

Buying a college essay online, getting someone to write it for you, adapting an email story, rehashing an essay that your grandfather wrote when he was applying to a college will not only be found out by admission officers but it will also get you banned from the school. So write from the heart and make sure you proofread your essay before submitting it.

Your writing and communication skills can make a significant impact on your college application. The college essay enables the school to discover your strengths other than your SAT scores and grade point averages. Hopefully the tips we have provided here can help you write a college essay that will clinch your admission to the school of your choice.
