The Worst College Towns In America

st louis
January 31st, 2015

For every up, there must be a down. So while there are dozens of great college towns out there, there are also some pretty bad ones! From high crime rates to low income levels, these are some of the worst college towns in America right now.

Buffalo, NY

This used to be one of the greatest towns in New York, but the economy has had its toll on Buffalo over the years. Buffalo used to be the 8th largest city in the U.S., but as the heavy industry moved overseas and to other parts of the country, Buffalo quickly declined.

Right now it has a pretty high violent crime rate, and the unemployment rate is almost 8%.

Atlanta, GA

Most people may not think of Atlanta as a college town at first. But it’s actually home to several universities including Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Emory and Spelman.

Even though Atlanta has a pretty large economy and a lot of opportunities, it’s one of the worst college towns due to the high crime and unemployment rates. Even though it’s usually safe while you’re on campus, that’s not always guaranteed and you’ll constantly be competing for a job with fellow students.

Cincinnati, OH

Cincinnati has a rich history, but unfortunately that won’t help in the case of being a bad choice of a college town.

Home to the University of Cincinnati and Xavier, this town has a lot of property crime. Businesses are also leaving quickly, either going out of business completely or moving to a much safer part of the country.

St. Louis, Missouri

Several universities call St. Louis home. St. Louis University, Washington University and the University of Missouri St. Louis are all found within city limits.

Even though there’s a lot to do, there’s also a lot of crime to watch out for. St. Louis boasts high violent crimes and property crimes, which is a bad combination for both students and businesses.

It seems the only good thing about St. Louis these days is its amazing barbeque.

Cleveland, OH

Cleveland is home to a lot of major companies, so the unemployment rate isn’t too bad. Keycorp. Cleveland and Sherwin-William are two of the biggest companies there. The cost of living isn’t excessive in Cleveland, making it easier for college students to get by on their next-to-nothing budgets.

The only main thing about Cleveland is the crime rates. Both property crime and violent crime are soaring in Cleveland, and don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

Tallahassee, FL

When you hear Florida, you would think that’d be a great place to go to college, right? Hitting the beach every day after class, sunny weather, and a relatively inexpensive place to live.

…but you also have to keep in mind a few other things. Even though Tallahassee’s crime rates aren’t bad, most people in this city don’t have a lot of extra money. In other words, it’s a fairly poor area.

Plus, if you’re interested in art or going out for entertainment than you probably won’t be a fan of Tallahassee. They don’t have nearly as many restaurants, bars, movies or other fun things to do as most college towns out there.
