sociology
May 25th, 2014

Man is a social animal and he needs to be with other people. Put him in isolation for a long time and eventually he will go insane. In addition, a man also needs other people to provide for what he needs because he can’t do it all himself. All of these have led to the formation of groups of people known as societies.

Sociology is the scientific study of society and the types of human groupings. It involves the study of small groups such as families, and it covers the study of societies as a whole. It offers a better understanding of how these groups function, and it provides possible solutions to problems of societies.

With a 4-year Sociology degree, you will be able to identify aspects of societies, and you will learn how to collect scientific evidence regarding social life. As a sociology student, you can gather and analyze statistical data, and conduct research through accurate observation.

The subjects you will study will include:

  • Social theories, which are models that can help you understand society;
  • Social research methods which can combine observations along with statistical analysis;
  • Ethnography, which is the field study of different human societies;
  • Law, crime, and morality, which gives a broad understanding of how a society defines right and wrong, how rules are formed for a society to function, and the consequences of breaking these rules;
  • Social welfare, which includes the study of unemployment and health care; this is the aspect of sociology that deals with helping the more troubled members of society.

You will be armed with the knowledge to help improve society so that people can live better lives.

What Can You Do with a Sociology Degree?

While a sociology degree can allow you to work in any job, you can put your special knowledge to use by working in the following areas:

  • Social work. You can help those who are at a disadvantage in society. You can provide assistance for the poor, the disabled, the unemployed, abandoned children, and victims of crime and abuse.
  • Counseling. You can provide assistance in either one-on-one or group sessions to help those troubled by particular problems such as addiction and relationship issues.
  • Community development. Here you can help improve the quality of life of larger number of people by bringing about positive change. You can help organize groups or events to lessen unemployment or to help alleviate racial or religious tension.
