If you have the desire to help people, then you may want to consider obtaining a Social Work degree. This is an umbrella degree, because there are a lot of possible specializations you can take. However, if you want to be a counselor, you will have to get a Master’s degree as well.
 
As a social worker, you can help people in many different ways:

  • You can help children in troubled families so that they are safe and well-cared for.
  • You can assist in the treatment of patients with emotional and psycho-social difficulties.
  • You can serve in the criminal justice system by assisting crime victims, or by participating in the rehabilitation of criminals.
  • You can take part in community development, by helping the people within the community and improving their quality of life.
  • You can help workers become more productive and feel more satisfied.
  • You can assist people with physical and mental disabilities to adjust to their circumstances and lead productive lives.
  • You can care for the sick, the poor, and the elderly, by providing for their needs and by helping them improve their conditions.
  • You can help care for schoolchildren by helping them cope with the challenges of learning and growing up.

What Can You Do with a Social Work Degree?
 
There are a lot of places where a Social Degree can be very useful. In fact, you can work for any company as part of its Human Resources or Marketing department. You can help develop and improve the working environment, as part of your efforts to help workers feel more satisfied and become more productive. In the Marketing department, you can be part of the company’s social outreach and public service programs.
 
Of course, you can also work for one of the many social work departments in government institutions. There are a lot of them. Some help out people in trouble due to their poverty, and you can help care for the impoverished by organizing charities and by helping people find jobs.
 
Others care for victims of various crimes, and you can help victims overcome the trauma of their experience. Some organizations focus on children, while others help the elderly.
 
You can work for private institutions as well which also focus on social work. Many are nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping without turning a profit. Others work in conjunction with political outfits.
 
And of course, you can always find work in one of the many healthcare institutions. These places care for the sick and injured, and your skills as a social worker will be very valuable.
