Should You Consider Being a Double Major?

Attending college is a fun and fruitful experience. Graduating with top marks would pave the way for a very bright future. However, if you want something more, sometimes a single degree is not enough. Why not do a double major?

Understand The Pros And Cons Of A Double-Major

Finishing college with a double major is a great accomplishment. There are only a small percentage of students who attempt it, and only very few would graduate. Remember that attending college is already a difficult albeit enjoyable endeavor, but to double major is very challenging.

There are a lot of perks in graduating with a double major, however. First of all, you will have an impressive resume to show to potential employers. Employers are always on the lookout for double-major graduates because they know these people have the patience, work ethics, and fortitude to excel.

Another benefit is the opportunities that would open up to you after you graduate. Work is only the tip of the iceberg for double major graduates. Post-graduate scholarships are often given to double major graduates for their hard work in college.

But there are downsides of being a double major. To begin with, there is the extreme difficulty of going through college. The cost would be higher. So unless you have a wealthy family to back you up, you would have to rely on student loans to get by.

Time management is also a great concern. You need to take more classes than the average college student and it requires more time and effort to study for exams. Come exams day, stress would peak and if you’re not prepared, it can cause serious medical problems.

Assess Your Level of Commitment And Capabilities

Before deciding on being a double major, you have to determine just how motivated and committed you are. A huge part of your success would greatly depend on it. A weak motivation would normally result in giving up early or having poor academic performance. You would just waste your time and money in something you are likely not going to complete.

Also, don’t try something if you don’t have the capabilities for it. Taking a double major in college doesn’t just require time and effort, it also needs the utmost dedication, intelligence, concentration, focus, patience, and mind power. If you have those qualities, then go for it!

Ask Around Before Deciding

The best people to talk to are those who opted for a double major themselves. Ask them questions about what to expect and how to go through it.

Asking those who already graduated with a double major would help you learn valuable tips and tricks. Ask them how they overcame all the hurdles. Also inquire as to how they coped with the pressure and difficulties of getting through one year at a time.

A double major should not be viewed as something unpleasant or unattainable. Sure, the physical, mental, and educational requirements are mindboggling. However, you should think of it as a challenge. Always remember, all the hardships you will encounter will reward you with a very lucrative career down the road.
