Math Degree Facts

Math
April 4th, 2014

Once you finish your undergraduate-level Math program you will obtain a Math Degree. Some universities offer it as a Bachelor of Science in Math, while others offer it as a Bachelor of Arts. There are even some that simply offer a Bachelor of Mathematics. But it’s the same thing.

It’s a bit difficult to define math precisely (it’s strange for a science that’s so precise), but at least even laymen recognize what it is when they see it. To put it simply, it’s a study of numbers, measurements, and equations. If you want increase your chances of getting into a top Math program at a well-regarded university, you need to make sure you get high grades in mathematics in high school. There is a lot more to math than just the familiar math forms you took in high school. If you think algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus were tough, then you’ll goggle at fractal geometry and fluid dynamics

What Can You Do with a Math Degree?

The short answer to this question is: anything! Every business in the world deals with money and numbers, so your math skills can be applied in many tasks in accounting. And even if you don’t enter a field that deals directly with numbers, many employers will regard your math degree as proof enough that you can learn just about anything technical quickly.

But if you wish to use the specialized knowledge you gained, then the best options for you will include:

• The banking industry. In retail banking, you’ll be involved in providing financial services to clients which involves evaluating their financial situations. In investment banking, you’ll need to assess risk regarding investments.
• The insurance industry. Insurance companies are all about statistics and probabilities, so your math skills will fit right in. You can then train as an actuary.
• You can work as a statistician. A lot of companies and political groups use statistical analysis and data to formulate policies.
Of course, like everyone else with a Bachelor’s degree, you can work as a teacher or as a journalist specializing in the sciences.

What Are the Best Schools to Get a Math Degree?

The great thing about studying math is that it’s a universal language, and the Pythagorean Theorem looks the same whether you study in Russia, Germany, England, or Japan. But you don’t have to go abroad to get the best Math university education. In the United States, the top universities which offer Math degrees are acknowledged to be among the best in the world. Here are ten of them in the US, with their world ranking in parenthesis:

1. (1) Harvard University
2. (2) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
3. (4) University of California, Berkeley (UCB)
4. (6) Stanford University, tied with Princeton University
6. (8) University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
7. (10) New York University (NYU)
8. (12) University of Chicago
9. (14) California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
10. (16) Carnegie Mellon University

Three other universities which qualify among the top 20 Math universities in the world are University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and University of Michigan.
