It’s not enough that you have a good product to sell. You need an effective way of letting people know about what you are offering so that they will want to buy it. This is called advertising, and it has become an extremely popular concept in recent years because of the Internet.
Before the Internet, there was a great divide in how businesses advertised. Large corporations bought airtime in TV and radio, and space in newspapers and magazines. Small businesses were limited to distributing pamphlets and displaying interesting signage.
On the Internet and through the use of Google, the playing field has changed quite a bit. While advertising graduates can still work for private companies in their advertising departments, they can also make use of their knowledge to earn money by selling products on the Internet.
What is Advertising?
In college, you can earn a bachelor’s degree in Advertising upon completing the program. Universities usually cover both the creative and management aspects of advertising, but some may allow you to concentrate on only either the creative or management side of the program.
During the course of your study, you’ll learn about the theory and practice of advertising. You’ll know how words and images can affect the perception and decisions of the consumer public. You’ll know more about consumer behavior and learn how to craft advertising campaigns through various media such as print, TV, radio, and online. You’ll also learn how to identify target audiences and demographics, and learn how to mold a campaign that helps you target those groups of buyers.
The management side of the business will also be covered. Budgeting will be a major consideration, as is the efficient use of other resources such as time and effort.
With a degree in Advertising, you’re a suitable candidate for any advertising and marketing department in a company. You’ll put what you learned to good use by helping to sell the products and services offered by your company.
You may also be tasked with maintaining and protecting the brand reputation of your company. This may put you in the public relations office as well. It’s this ability to promote a brand which also makes your knowledge invaluable to politicians and political groups, such as lobbying firms.
And if you want, you can also become a blogger or an affiliate marketer. With this profession, you can create your own website, send your customers to various ecommerce websites, and then earn money for every visit or every sale.
